The United Transportation Union (UTU), which represents 125,000 North American rail, bus and mass transit workers, has named Brad Lakin, Managing Partner of SLChapman LLC in Wood River, Illinois, a designated legal counsel.

Only a very elite group of attorneys with significant experience representing injured workers receive this special designation. There are only eight attorneys in all of Illinois who have designated legal counsel status and none in Missouri.

The goal of the program is to provide injured railroad workers with a referral list of attorneys who have the experience and the qualifications to handle complex litigation under the Federal Employers' Liability Act (FELA) - the law that guides the handling of railroad employee injury cases.

Brad Lakin said, "I'm very aware of what a singular distinction it is to be named a designated legal counsel by the UTU. For more than 30 years, we have provided legal representation to thousands of injured railroad and transportation employees. This designation recognizes the level of experience and success our firm has had handling the cases of injured railroad workers.

Designated Legal Counsels are held to high ethical and professional standards, including compliance with a strict code of conduct overseen by a union Board of Ethics and Conduct.

"America's railroads have a long and proud history, but part of that history is the sad fact that this is dangerous work where thousands of workers suffer serious injury every year. Our firm has a long-term commitment to fighting for the rights of injured railroad workers and their families and this designation will help us continue and expand that commitment," Lakin said.
