Accutane® Injuries
After several years on the market, a high number of reports of Accutane® related injuries and rectal bleeding began to arise. These injuries were all extremely serious, and below is a brief description of each.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory Bowel Disease in not the same thing as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, attacks the interior wall of the intestines with inflammation. Patients who suffer from IBD must endure chronic and severe pain and discomfort as well as the need for bowel discharge which many times cannot be controlled.
Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a condition whereby ulcers form, grow and attach themselves to the lining of the wall of the large intestine. The result of the presence of these ulcers is extreme pain and discomfort for the patient as well as painful and chronic diarrhea. Over time, ulcerative colitis can lead to serious and permanent damage to the rectum.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is an otherwise rare condition in which inflammation arises on the inside of the intestinal wall, usually the small intestine and sometimes the parts of the large intestine. Crohn's can attack other parts of the intestine as well. This condition involves deeper invasion of the intestinal wall, is extremely painful and can lead to permanent damage to the intestines and to the bowel wall.
